The DVD is one of the most exciting developments in home entertainment that we have seen in some time. A new advance is always exciting, especially one that makes so many marked improvements over that which it is “replacing”. DVDs allow us access to a wide variety of special features and options that just aren’t possible with videocassettes. Now, as more and more people are recognizing the joys of DVD, the film industry is making attempts to expand that market. Many older films are being re-released on DVD all the time, and companies are now popping up specifically to provide online DVD rentals. Not being one to miss a trick, Wal-Mart has put together a DVD rental site. They have an extensive library of titles, with a comprehensive categorical breakdown that allows the customer to find specific films and film genres quickly and easily. The service itself is an excellent one. The concept is simple; for a monthly fee, you can rent as many DVDs as you like. You develop a list of DVDs that you want to see. Then, you receive the first DVD available from your list. When you return that one, the next one is sent to you. There are no time constraints and no late fees. Simply take however much time you wish to watch the film, then return it and wait for the next one. It’s about as close to hassle-free as you’re going to get. Combine that wonderful service with the established customer-pleasing juggernaut that is Wal-Mart, and you’ve got yourself one heck of a deal. |
